An incredible performance from an incredible band. This is why people like prog rock. I can also understand why some people just don’t get it.
Check the keyboardist/singer’s face at 20 seconds. Priceless!

One of my favourite pieces of music is Sketch for Summer from the Durutti Column. It’s been used countless times as incidental music on news reports and documentaries, but is rarely heard on the radio save for occasional plays on the likes of BBC 6 Music’s always excellent Gideon Coe programme.
The band (named for Spanish anarchist Buenaventura Durruti) have never really been what you’d call successful – recording album after album of great music, it seems that only those ‘in the know’ actually buy them. Bit of a shame, this, since guitarist Vini Reilly is a genius. And it’s not just me who thinks so – The Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ guitarist John Frusciante once said that Reilly is ” the world’s greatest guitarist”.
The track Sketch for Summer appears on the band’s debut LP entitled The Return of The Durutti Column and was produced by the late Martin Hannett. It’s an odd sounding production – Hannett was always ahead of his time as a producer. The LP originally came in a now-legendary sandpaper sleeve. The idea was that it would destroy the other records in your collection. Not so much a Situationist ploy as a slightly daft idea, then. The LP now changes hands (if included with limited edition free flexidisc 7″) for upwards of £100. I own the £4 Cd reissue, obv.
Yes, god-like French band Phoenix have upped their coolness level to ‘Ultra Maximum’ and are giving away a free live album from their ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’ tour. There are eight tracks on the album taken from live from Sydney. You can download the album free and legal from this page.
Here’s some cool Phoenix videos to watch while you download……….
Thanks Phoenix!
After a Twitter update earlier reminding me of this …….
I thought id revisit the classic video, and as i suspected its still the coolest music video of all time.

Whats your favourite music vid?
Make up your own minds……
Legendary rockers AC/DC are providing the soundtrack for Iron Man 2, the sequel to one of the best superhero movies of the last few years. To celebrate this wonderful union a very cool video has been produced for the 1980 classic ‘Shoot to Thrill’. The vid is a mash-up of footage from the Iron Man 2 trailer and AC/DC live on tour in Buenos Aires last year. Having been to the Hampen Park, Glasgow gig on this tour we can attest to the amazing time everyone seems to be having, it was amazing!. The video is well worth a watch we reckon………
